  • Bear on a cliff

    Bear on a cliff

The bear had just managed to steal a large bag of cocaine from the drug lord’s hideout. But as he was about to make his escape, the drug lord’s goons showed up and surrounded him. What will the bear do to get away?
  • Nomads

    Nomads

I’m on my walk. Talking to ducks and chatting with the geese. Stopping to look at the Yellowstone River at times but keeping my pace high so I can get back to work. Clouds are rolling over the Absoroka Range. Today, I’m in Livingston.

Yesterday was at a jump line in the sun two counties over. Day before? The same. Three days before? A blinding snowstorm and evacuating the Tom Minor region. The weeks before that? Vacationing in Gardiner hitting up some sweet gravel. Before that? Miller Creek drainage bitching about the hordes of Bozeman, folk. Before that? Having pizza in the apartment … together.

That’s like a whole month of being in a different place.

Wow! I just walked past some goslings. The last time I was here they were so small. Now, they’re huge. Stopping to take video, this will come in handy for a post later.

  • The rewards for a rainy vacation

The rewards for a rainy vacation

My big block of vacation time came to an end with a sunny day. And what better to happen but to stumble upon the ride of the year. An obscure little loop called Brownback Gulch. Fantastic downhill through the pine and aspens. Even my partner was ripping the downhill. And it all started with a big batch of bacon. Now that is the way to end a vacation from the salt mines.

  • 24 Hours of Round the Clock

24 Hours of Round the Clock

The forecast looks wet and right now it is so cold outside our mountains are increasing their snowpack. I have heard reports that we will not get to do some of the course due to flooding. What this all boils down to is epic. Just as I hope to be outside soaking, literally, up life it is also my hope that everyone gets out for this long holiday weekend. If not, shame on you. And if you must, then at least follow my epic. You can do it in two places

Pick your poison. I am hoping my pit dude Norman, titled as “watercraft engineer”, will post some updates. But sometimes conditions and cell coverage can play havoc so don’t be alarmed to see just white noise. In that case you know I’ll be back to blog about it. Stay dry my friends.

  • Whatchamacallit

Another day gone and forgot to blog again. Sheesh! Hard getting back into the swing of things.

I went on to The Triple Ring Productions web site to do some updates today and got all sidetracked on making a new image for the banner which rotates between the events/years. I got that done but isn’t get to what I really wanted. I plan to update the Butte 100 page and get a page called

  • Fatty

    Fatty

And I am not talking about the good kind! Good morning from the City Brew (it’s a holiday, don’t know where to go). I am about to take Marcy hiking on the trail up the street (hopefully the sheep are not there).

I am simply known as the “Blueberry Scone Dude” and I am starting to take offense to it since I have become aware that I am 10 lbs overweight. Very sad day … Just call me Fatty!

I have noticed that I am sluggish on the bike. When I stand up I can not do it for as long as I used to.  It is not the injury either, it is something else, something that is making me mash instead of pedal.  It is weight, yes, this morning I stepped on the scale and was horrified to find and extra ten pounds since my injury.  That is ridiculous! Eat to heal is a bunch of bull shit and as of today it is over.  No more eating!

Yesterday’s ride was in the rain once again but just being out on the bike made me happy. I went up Route 12 toward Lolo Hot Springs for a spin. I went by these cool llamas and their ears reminded me of the peace sign so I gave them the peace sign back.  “Right on dudes”, I yelled to them.  They seemed to say, “peace bro”.

  • Carbo Rocket

My friend and I have been trying something new called CarboRocket. He is reporting good things but I believe that our minds play tricks on us and this could all be psychological.  Still though, I have noticed a few things while using it.  More testing is needed but I think this could be the next Heed but without secret ingredients, bad tastes, and costing a arm and a leg for a simple energy drink.

    (1) Mood : For some reason when I start drinking it my mood gets real good.  I have been riding in pouring rain for two days straight and I hate it.  But when I start drinking it feels like the sun is out and I love riding. This is the most noticeable thing!

    (2) Recovery : I have not experienced any left over leg tiredness he next day after these rides.  This could be due to Recoverite. Even after my all out effort climb up the pass in 17 minutes I felt recovered.

    (3) Power (maybe): I climbed the pass in a higher gear than normal and if my body weight would not be 10 pounds over weight I would of simply flew up the pass in an even bigger gear.  I climbed it in 17 minutes.

    (4) Hydration : I don’t notice any evidence that it keeps me hydrated.  I seem to be more de-hydrated than with Cytomax a couple hours after the ride.

    (5) Endurance : Maybe a let down here (or a lack of protein/fat in it). I felt great yesterday until just 1.5 hours into the ride then my HR started dropping and I couldn’t keep pace.  I am planning 14 hours of endurance riding this week to look into it more. Maybe I need to mix it stronger.

    (6) Stomach : My stomach is hurting and feels bad from all the medicine I have been taking. I took this on an empty stomach on my indoor ride.  It did not upset my stomach and I even felt it made my stomach distress go away.  This would be great for the flu!

    (7) Taste :  The stuff tastes really bad at first sip! The sips thereafter are not that bad (not good though).  What I do notice is that I don’t have this big snot (goober) build up in my throat like Cytomax does.  With Cytomax I am always spitting this build up in my throat but with Rocket fuel I think I don’t get it.  It is clean and stays fresh. Three scoops seem really strong and almost overbearing.

  • Deer Creek to Pattee Canyon

This loop is a good one for winter training. It doesn”t have the technical single track or fast and fiery descents. It does have lots of logging roads and back country touring possibilities. A good idea is to bring along a camera in case you run into a couple deer, mountain lion, elk, or bear. The trail started out well enough as you go along the Kim Williams Recreation Trail. There is some nice single track that runs along the river. Beware though that you might run into some transients as I did. Kind of freaky.

Now I know where I will go when I run out of unemployment. The trail continues along the rail road tracks and a little right onto some double track that quickly turns into single track. this section runs beside a firing range and a huge drop off to the tracks below. It is a quite exciting section.

From there its up Deer Creek Road to a logging road to the right about a mile up. You follow the logging roads up and through to the Lolo National Forest and finally to the Pattee Canyon Recreation Area. Here you will find people playing Frisbee golf. Something I find very very strange. It is pretty simple from there as you exit the canyon to the west and into Missoula via the Pattee Canyon Road which happens to let you coast for 20 minutes straight without peddling once.

  • Marshall Canyon MTB

    Marshall Canyon MTB

The route starts out on the Mount Jumbo Rec Area trails that start out heading towards the interstate. The climb is moderate but turns steep as you leave the hiking trails and continue around and through Helgate Canyon. The views are remarkable. I wish I had my camera. Once on the East Missoula side the single track becomes exciting as you wind your way into town. I used my brakes more than I should. I was taken back by the steep terrain and unbelievable speed on could obtain ripping down this narrow side-hill track.

The road section to Marshall Canyon Road is boring except for going past the river. Once to the road you climb about a mile and head into a old logging road to the left. The climb on the road is nice and some views of the valley below are good. The climb continues into the Mount Jumbo Recreation area again. The loop goes over the saddle and back down into the Rattlesnake residential area of Missoula. The downhill is ripping fast.

The loop finishes up with roads back to the starting area. The entire ride is great only because of the initial climb around Mount Jumbo. The single track into East Missoula is the best I have ver rode and also the most exciting. The rest is just a workout with a view. The downhill into the last road section is also a highlight if you like speed.
