Birthday Surprise in Billings

January 7, 2012, held a secret, one sure to light up a special someone’s world. With hearts full of anticipation, we approached an unassuming apartment door in Billings, Montana. A gentle knock and the door swung open to reveal my mom, her day about to turn extraordinary.

“Happy Birthday, Mom!” Our voices were the fanfare to her smile, a beacon of joy in the Montana morning. Her astonishment was pure, and her words tumbled out in delight, “Oh my gosh… this is the best gift ever!” In our embrace, I felt the warmth of shared memories and the spark of new ones to come.

Mo and I, with spirits high from the successful surprise, ventured into Billings for some urban exploration. And what did we stumble upon? The Billings canal, a frozen playground just waiting for the treads of our Mukluks. It was the kind of day that reminded us that the best adventures are often the ones we don’t plan.
