    Trumpet Swan

A single trumpet swan glided across the still water, a vision of grace among the reeds and open sky.

Two Forest Service personnel, thigh-deep in the chilly wetland, were out checking for “wells” when they spotted the swan. Wading a little farther in, they froze, almost holding their breath as the bird swam closer. For a moment, they worried their clumsy splashes would scare it off, but the swan drifted peacefully, seemingly unbothered by their presence. The swan tilted its head, giving them a brief, curious look before resuming its slow journey through the reeds.

They exchanged a glance, knowing they’d just shared one of those rare, quiet moments with nature that made all their hours in the mud and water more than worth it.

    Reflections in Still Water

There’s something timeless about watching a swan glide effortlessly across a glassy lake. In this quiet corner of nature, where the sky meets the water and the mountains stand as silent witnesses, time seems to slow down.

On this particular day, Mo captured the peaceful rhythm of a trumpeter swan’s day, gracefully navigating the reflective water, rippling only the surface but leaving a deep impression. The landscape, vast and still, frames the swan like a living painting, with distant hills and wide-open skies giving the scene a dreamlike quality. The contrast of the white plumage against the natural earth tones makes the bird a quiet star in its own element.

It’s a place where you can feel the weight of stillness, where even the sound of your breath seems too loud. In moments like this, nature feels both grand and intimate, a reminder that the simple presence of a bird in its natural habitat can evoke a sense of peace that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Cuddles and I are at it again. 🚵‍♂️🌲

For me a perfect day for a trail ride through the forest, weaving between trees, and soaking in the calm. Mo of course, had to stop by the lake, because what’s an adventure without a little reflection? 🌿💦

Nature never disappoints. Neither does Cuddles. 😎

Off the Beaten Path in the Park – Black Canyon

Our last day in Yellowstone National Park and this tie we headed off the beaten path again. This time to Black Canyon. And to run into two, yes two, rattlesnakes.

Off the Beaten Path in the Park – Mammoth

From the top to the bottom we finish up our terraces exploration by hiking from the spring at the top all the way to the front porch where we would relax, drink libations, and watch elk.

Off the Beaten Path in the Park – Trees

Continuing on with our journey, Paul, Mo, and I get a little higher on the terraces and start to encounter dead trees overcome by these hot spring formulations. The storm intensifies and the sun sets.

Off the Beaten Path in the Park – Reflections

Continuing on our journey the sunset starts to get sandwiched between earth and the storm, bearing down on us as we expect to get rain any moment.

Off the Beaten Path in the Park – Travertine Wonders

Our walk through the terraces, yes on the beaten path, continues with the wonderment of the travertine structures.

Off the Beaten Path in the Park – Hot Springs

Continuing on … yes, still on our after dinner walk. Common! How many pretty pictures can one handle in a day. I need time to marvel and enhance. These are some photos to savor.

Off the Beaten Path in the Park – Terraces

As a storm rolled in we thought it would be nice to take a walk after a feast of tacos at the Chittenden House. That walk turned out to be a foray into the terraces for the evening. Approaching them I realized I had never visited the terraces. Maybe not an off the beaten path effort but then the storm drove the hoards away so that in itself is not exactly popular. The thunder solidified that we would be alone.

One adventure we had was to hike to Osprey Falls. Totally worth it … and so was the nut butter sandwich picnic and dip.
