    Bikes and Tacos in August

Ah, Missoula in August! The air is buzzing not just with the warmth of summer but also with the excitement of outdoor adventures and culinary delights. This isn’t just about any summer escape; it’s a tale of two of Missoula’s greatest treasures: mountain biking and taco nights at Imagination Brewery.

Let’s start with the mountain biking. Imagine whizzing through the lush trails of Missoula, the wind in your hair and the scenic beauty of Montana all around. The trails here are not just paths; they are gateways to experiencing nature at its finest. From the challenging steeps to the serene meadows, every pedal brings a new story, a new thrill. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie, the trails of Missoula are like a mountain biker’s dream come true.

But what’s an adventure without some good food? Enter Imagination Brewery, a place where hops and dreams come together. On taco night, this place transforms into a fiesta of flavors. The tacos here aren’t just food; they’re a mosaic of local ingredients, each telling a story of Missoula’s rich culinary culture. Pair them with a pint of craft beer, and you’ve got yourself a meal that’s as memorable as the day’s ride.

As the sun sets over Missoula, with tired legs and happy hearts, the realization dawns – it’s not just the breathtaking trails or the mouth-watering tacos that make this place special. It’s the spirit of Missoula itself, a blend of adventure and relaxation, of nature and culture, that makes every experience here unforgettable.

  • Last July’s Journeys on Two Wheels

July was a month of pedal-powered adventures and unexpected turns, setting off with the Butte 50 mountain bike race.

Picture this: scorching temperatures, rugged trails, and me, pushing the limits on my trusty mountain bike. The race was a true test of endurance, and let’s just say it was a close call between conquering the trail and the trail conquering me.

The thrills didn’t stop there. We took a trip to Switzer Mountain Bike Park, where the landscape was a lush playground of ferns and trails.

It was a refreshing change from the intense race, allowing for some leisurely exploration.

Moki, my mountain bike, and DW, my e-mtb, got their fair share of action.

These two wheeled companions were more than just bikes; they were my partners in crime as we traversed the varied terrain.

Mo, my fellow adventurer, had a different kind of quest – foraging for mushrooms in the forest’s hidden corners.

Amidst these escapades, winter was the last thing on my mind. Yet, I found myself sifting through photos, reminiscing about colder days.

Our outdoor exploits also led us to Lake Como.

Where we combined hunting with some serene bike rides.

One can not beat around the lake’s picturesque scenery.

Truley a fantastic time where I started to appreciate biking again.

Frequent visits to Imagination Brewery became a staple of our July routine.

It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of riding and exploring.

In a twist, I decided to switch gears – literally. I welcomed Wednesday, my new downhill bike, into the fold. This addition signaled a shift from pedaling to a more gravity-fueled biking experience.

It was an exciting change, promising new adventures and challenges.

Our exploration wasn’t limited to established trails. The surrounding forests of Missoula called to us, and we answered, venturing into the wilds, discovering new paths and secret spots only known to those who dare to venture off the beaten track.

So yes, I did a lot of mountain biking. But it was more than just biking; it was a series of adventures, each unique and memorable in its own right.

  • Remember When?

School is almost back in session and the summer is coming to an end. do you remember asking the question, is it spring?
  • Ravine Ice Adventure Delay

We attempted to hike a well-known trail, but icy conditions forced us to turn back. Although we managed to capture some great fat biking footage, the experience was more invigorating than being surrounded by summer wildfire smoke. Admittedly, we’re quite behind on sharing our saved media online.

  • A Threat to the Art of Cycling?

E-MTBs have made the art of cycling more complicated. On the one hand, they can seem to make it easier to get out and ride, especially on challenging terrain. But on the other hand, they can also take away some of the challenge and satisfaction of cycling. This image of DarkWing’s guts in a vice is a reminder that e-MTBs are complex machines that require regular maintenance. The battery, motor, and other components can all wear out over time, and it’s important to keep them in good condition to avoid breakdowns.

  • Sewing Up February

The snow-covered hill in the distance is a reminder of a winter that has passed. The wildfire smoke that fills the sky now obscures the view, but it cannot erase the memories of those cold, snowy days.

The smoke is like a needle and thread, sewing up the memories of winter and closing out the season.

The images are a beautiful representation of the beauty and fragility of nature. The snow-covered hill is a stunning sight, but it is also fleeting. The smoke that now fills the sky is a reminder of the destructive power of wildfires, and the fact that even the most beautiful places are not immune to harm.

This image is a reminder of the passage of time, the beauty of nature, and the fragility of our world. It is a fitting tribute to a winter that has passed, and a warning about the dangers of wildfires.

  • Winter’s Beauty Remembered

    Dear Diary,

Today is a surreal day. As I sit by the window, peering out into the summer afternoon, I am reminded of the stark contrast between the present and the past. The skies are filled with the lingering haze of wildfire smoke, which has draped the landscape in an eerie, orange hue. It’s hard to believe that this is the middle of summer, a season usually synonymous with warmth, clear skies, and endless blue horizons. Instead, the smoke has taken over, casting a somber shadow over the beauty of this time of year.

I remember the winters we’ve had, when the world was transformed into a magical wonderland. The contrast between then and now is striking. Back in winter, the air was crisp, and the ground was coated with a pristine blanket of snow. The beauty of a winter sunset was beyond compare – the sky painted in hues of pink, purple, and gold, reflecting off the glistening snow below. Each sunset felt like a masterpiece crafted just for my eyes.

The sunsets during this smoky summer are also beautiful in their own haunting way. The smoke creates a surreal filter, diffusing the sunlight and transforming it into a golden ball of fire, larger than life. The colors are richer and deeper, and the setting sun appears like a glowing ember, setting the world ablaze. But as captivating as this sight may be, it’s a stark reminder of the destruction and pain caused by the wildfires that continue to rage in the distance.

Amidst the beauty of these smoky sunsets, I can’t help but yearn for the pure and untainted winters. I miss the sound of laughter as kids playfully throw snowballs, the comforting warmth of hot cocoa by the fireplace, and the sight of families coming together during the holiday season. Winter brought a sense of calmness, a chance to slow down and reflect, much like I am doing now as I jot down these thoughts.

As I write this, I can’t help but hope for better days ahead. I don’t long for the return of those picturesque winters, where the world was transformed into a white wonderland. Because I do hate winter. I yearn for the summer days when the sun shines brightly, and the skies are clear.

Until then, I will cherish the moments I have and hold onto the memories of those serene winter days. I will also remain hopeful that one day, the beauty of winter will outweigh the beauty of these smoky sunsets, and the world can be restored to its truest form. And I run away to a snow-less landscape.

With love and longing for brighter days, Bill

  • Is eMTB Ruining My Life? Finding Balance and Mindful Cycling… Perhaps

Is eMTB Ruining My Life? Finding Balance and Mindful Cycling… Perhaps

It’s important to recognize that technology, such as eMTBs (electric mountain bikes), can sometimes alter the dynamics of an activity and impact my habits and behaviors. In my case, it seems like the introduction of eMTBs may have led to increased cycling, potentially reducing the diversity of my activities and social interactions.

While cycling, whether acoustic or electric, can be a healthy and enjoyable activity, any behavior that becomes excessive or starts negatively affecting other aspects of my life can be a cause for concern. It’s essential for me to maintain a balance between my hobbies and daily responsibilities, as well as my physical and mental well-being.

If I feel that my increased use of eMTBs is causing me to neglect other activities, social interactions, or rest, it might be helpful to reevaluate my cycling habits. I should consider the following steps:

    1. Self-Awareness: Acknowledge the impact of eMTBs on my activity level and recognize if it’s causing any imbalances in my life.
    2. Set Limits: Establish reasonable boundaries for eMTB usage to ensure I engage in other activities, rest, and spend time with friends and family.
    3. Diversify Activities: Incorporate other activities I enjoy into my routine. This could include different forms of exercise, hobbies, or leisure activities.
    4. Social Interaction: Make an effort to engage in social activities or group rides with others who share my interests.
    5. Seek Support: If I find it challenging to manage my eMTB usage independently, I should consider seeking support from friends, family, or a mental health professional who can help me establish healthier habits.
    6. Mindful Riding: If I want to continue using my eMTB, I should try to be mindful of how and when I use it. I need to be aware of its impact on my life and make adjustments as needed.

Remember, the goal is to find a balance that allows me to enjoy my passion for cycling on eMTBs while still engaging in a variety of activities that contribute to my overall well-being and happiness. If I find it challenging to regain this balance on my own, seeking support and guidance from professionals can be beneficial.

Is eMTB Ruining My Life? Finding Balance and Mindful Biking… Perhaps. But, you know what? Ah, f**k it, dude, I’m going biking! The thrill of the ride, the wind in my hair – it brings pure joy. I’ll take these thoughts with me.

What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

    Mr. Bear
    What do you think Smokey?

Thanks for asking! How does a stuffed animal speak anyway? Lately, I’ve been focusing on finding humor amidst life’s twists and turns. It’s been a journey of rediscovering strength and cherishing memories. Embracing new adventures, like fat biking, has been quite liberating. Remember last winter?

Taking care of my mental well-being has been a priority, and I’m grateful for the support of loved ones during these challenging times. Your friendships means a lot, and I’m taking it one non-bike thing at a time, remembering the joy of biking and life’s unpredictable but beautiful moments.

  • Unseen Forces, Unyielding Strength

Life took a heartbreaking twist at 6:38 pm on April 1st.

Here’s a glimpse of the last time mom and dad saw each otherβ€”a cherished moment that reminds me of the love they shared and the support they both brought into my life.

Sometimes life’s events leave us pondering, searching for meaning in unexpected places. As I faced a challenging race recently, I couldn’t help but wonder if my mom’s spirit wasn’t there to help me out of a tough spot. All my abilities taken away, I had to struggle to the end and finish. Her power of walk and health was removed, but she kept fighting. Her recent passing has made me realize that perhaps I took her support and presence for granted. Now, I find myself reconnecting with memories and rediscovering strength since some of the burden of my self-pity and self-punishment has been lifted. I am grateful that her pain is gone every day now, and I know she’ll forever be with me, guiding me through life’s twists and turns. It’s time for me to buck up and stop feeling sorry for myself.
