  • Montana’s Camping Loophole

    Montana’s Camping Loophole

Planning a Montana camping adventure? Here’s a little money-saving tip I stumbled across recently (wish I’d known this years ago!)

    Harpers Lake

If you’re 12 or older, you’ll need a Conservation License to access most state lands in Montana, including their Fishing Access Sites (FAS). But here’s where it gets interesting…

    License Costs:

    • Conservation License: Residents aged 18-61: $8; Seniors (62+): $4; Nonresidents: $10
    • Fishing License: Residents: $21 for a season; Nonresidents: $100
    • Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Pass (AISPP): Residents: $2; Nonresidents: $7.50
    Lets go camping

    The Money-Saving Part

At many FAS sites, camping costs $12 per night without a fishing license but drops to just $7 with one. That’s a $5 discount every night you stay!

    When Does It Make Sense?

For residents, getting a fishing license and AISPP will set you back $23 total ($21 + $2). With that $5 nightly discount, you’d need to camp about 5 nights to break even.

    Bottom Line

If you’re planning to camp for 5+ nights at Montana’s Fishing Access Sites, grabbing a fishing license could actually save you money. Plus, hey, you might actually use it to catch dinner one night!

    Moonrise Gallery

Perched with my coffee as dawn paints Mount Sentinel, I’m hit by a wave of nostalgia. Each adventure, from thrilling snow biking to serene beachside moments in Oceanside, has left its unique imprint on me.

I’ve lost camera lenses to the wild, bent bike spokes, and faced the pang of missed opportunities. Yet, I’ve found joy in the unplanned, learning that the journey itself is the true gem.

Here’s to the scenic detours and the unexpected turns that enrich our stories. To the wanderlust in us all, constantly growing and learning from the road less traveled.

January warmth, seafood in town, A vacation flavor, nothing brings us down.

The ocean air, the sound of the sea, Such moments in life, make us feel free.
With snuggles by my side, the journey not complete, Oceanside, we’ll visit again, someday to repeat.

  • Brooks Lake Lodge

    Brooks Lake Lodge

As I mentioned in a previous post this is our 5th time coming to the Togwotee Winter Classic. Traditionally we have just rushed back to work the morning after the race. 3 days and two nights max. We always wished that we could do this one ride up to Brooks Lake Lodge. So this year we took 4 days off. And boy what a diffrence a day makes. So much more relaxation and peace. Strike another against the 40 hour work week. Right?

So we woke when we wanted and didn’t rush anything; which was absolutely fantastic. We ended up first riding some snow shoe trails and then turned our wheels up the big climb to Brooks Lake. It was a hell of a climb but the views from our fatties were absolutely the most picturesque I think that I have ever done. There were crown-like cliffs and buttes surrounding us as we trudged up the trail. Mo remarked that it almost seemed like we were in Canada. When we got to the lodge we took some time and read about the history. There was this one story about a grizzly bear who broke a 30 pound trap and carried it away. Three fellas hunted it down and shot it … which wasn’t my favorite part. But they describe how 3 guys shot at it but only found one puncture. Everybody still claimed the victory. But oh well, we bombed back down the mountain.

The big surprise of the weekend was Dubois Wyoming. What a cool little town. I have never seen a town like it, except for where I grew up in Roundup. The Utah like cliffs that surrounded the town on the north side where cool to. At the top of one was a mountain bike park. For sure a diamond discovery. We will be back!

  • Down the path

    Down the path

I learned today that the 24 hour race in West Yellowstone will probably not be on my path this year. Sometimes though you just have to hang your head out the window and enjoy the ride. I am bummed … sure. But for every bad gulp of cough medicine I have a endless amount of good health. What is that you say?  I cant hear you.  The wind. It’s blowing in my ears.

  • Perfect Place is Being There

    Perfect Place is Being There

This is part 14 in a series of blog posts that I am dedication to my favorite photos of 2009. Today’s inductee and now a resident in my “Creeks Streams and Rivers” photo album is “Perfect Place is Being There“. I took this photo Jul 28, 2009 at 4:27 PM with my Canon EOS 10D.

    The Perfect Place

Another photo taken after the 24 Solo worlds on my sightseeing day (http://goo.gl/oJa4). This place was truly magical. This is actually a rest stop just down the mountain from the Ptarmigan Cirque. Numerous hiking trails went from this place and when I return I want to hike them.

I remember this was where I realized that my day was over and that I must turn around and head back to the lodge. I really really wanted to stay but I was feeling weak and getting sicker by the moment.

There was this family playing Frisbee in the parking lot. I remember them well because they were so happy. Here in the states you see families on vacation and they are always bickering and arguing.

  • Lost Photos Revive Hopes

    Lost Photos Revive Hopes

Last summer I threw a fit after a bike ride and busted my camera.  Paul and Ross would remember it well. I had lost my memory card but today I found out what really happened to my memory card out of my camera.  In a twist of fait I found some long lost photos and I cherish the moments they capture even more now that at the time I blew my lid.

When my camera got in the way of a flying floor pump it got busted and apparently I threw it in my book bag. I don’t know how it happened but the card must have gotten ejected. Not only that but the card found its way through a rip and into the interior of the bag (out of reach of everyday use).

The next day when I discovered my camera was working I went and bought a new memory card. I had went back that night and searched through every inch of the dog poop laden parking lot at Blue Mountain.

I just discovered it today and there must have been a reason that it got lost and I never saw the photos. At this time in the year when it is so cold outside and it snows almost every other day.  It is a contrast to see such beauty and awesome trails.  It provides hope that one day it will be that way again.

  • Ride Goes Off With BANG

    Ride Goes Off With BANG

Hello from City Brew as I watch the sun come up over Lolo Peak.  Today is a good day for a ride and ride we will, over Lolo Pass to Idaho (check out the map). Yesterday’s training ride was tempo and was going great until BANG! I broke a rear spoke and had to hobble home.  I felt good because it would force me to put on the new Neuvation wheel that the president of the company sent me to replace this one before what had just happened, happened.

    Waver Report and Award

Yesterday’s wave report was much better than the previous one where I got 0% wave back from other cyclists.  Yesterday I got 4 wave backs and 2 non wavers (screw them).  One of them I yelled at because not only did he not wave he gave me the “look”.  This weeks Waver of the Week is Shawn Radley of MontanaCycloCross.Com.  He not only waved but he said “Hey Bill” … awesome.  We should all be like Shawn, it will brighten up our road riding world here in Missoula. Head on over to his site and say, “hey” back.

  • New Stuff

    New Stuff

My (I would like to say friend but he never writes me) ex-friend is involved in ski racing and this is the site link he emailed me at work. I know I said that he never e-mails me but in this e-mail he didnt even say hi. I was the target of a mass mailing.

Even though here is his site Peru Nordic Masters Ski Pool Official Page. I have also added thier latest race to my schedule if anyone is interested. Its supposed to be world famous.

Another link I have added is the PatchSprint.com . I have added it to my Adventure Racing Link Page . It is a race that has been held at Pokomoonshine for quite a long time. It is funny how I lived there for 12 years and never heard of it. I hope it is serious because I plan on attending.

    And finally new images
