Planning Crazy Mountains

The Crazy Mountain Range is reported to rise dramatically some 7,000 feet above the Yellowstone River Valley and the surrounding plains 15 miles northwest of Big Timber. They cover an area of 136,547 acres in which my friend Paul and I plan to explore a small chunk of it. It is a road-less area and we will be accessing it from Big Timber Canyon Road from the East. These formations stimulate the desire to reach a higher place but also geologists who say there is an abundance of trapped gas. I think Ill climb around a little before technology is used to ruin this remote wilderness wonder. In the past nineteenth century railroad land grants, now mostly passed on to other parties, make coherent resource management difficult. Efforts to preserve this place as a wilderness have failed in the past, but conservationists have once again proposed wilderness designation for the Crazies. I am in support of such efforts but for the moment, however, the Crazy Mountains remain the most spectacular alpine range in Montana without wilderness protection.

This was truly the most spectacular alpine range in MT without wilderness protection. It was amazing and yet another great adventure with my bro Bill. Man, we have covered a lot of ground. I suppose that is why I just could not refuse the offer to hit Razor Back Mt. in the Bitteroots this year (2010) when you suggested we complete a loop on our Mt. Bikes. I might have pushed a lot of elevation but I did miles of technical trail and you rode up miles of steep lose trail in ways that blew my mind. Despite a few miles of blow down to climb through as we fought of darkness it was perfect...I suppose that too was part of a perfect epic adventure. Man, we are blessed! May we have many more.

Another truly great chapter in our book. I would suggest that it was one of the best this year. I will blog about it sometime when I get a chance. It is fun to look back like this.
